Hi Ben,

The jaw moving problem you describe sounds
familiar, except I usually see it while students
are tonguing. Here's something you might try:

Turn the barrel 180 degrees so that your student
can blow into the instrument (have them hold on
to the barrel) while you finger the clarinet. This
helps them get the sensation of how it should
"feel." It also is easier to concentrate on one thing
at a time. This trick has also helped me teach
students what it feels like to cross the break
and get a more legato technique between the
slurs.
