So, does that mean that a career in music is more stable than one in
computer engineering? Something to think about ...

Yes and no. I have an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering since 1970, but worked
only one year in the field. Then I started a career as a teacher of
Mathematics. After fifteen years of teaching I quit, got an M.Sc. in
Computer Science. I had an appointment for only four years with the Computer
Science departmant of the Catholic University of Nijmegen, was very happy to
have the job. When the project was finished, I did not find another job
again: too old.

On the other side: one of my teachers of clarinet now is a salesman of cars.
And the horn player who taught my oldest son the first beginnings of
euphonium playing was very happy he could participatre in an early
retirement scheme (I hope I use he right words) at the age of 49. He sold
his horns and never played again. He is now 65 (the horn player, not my
son).

So ... .
