As a Catholic Choir director who also happens to play clarinet.. there are several ways to get into a church orchestra and I offer the following suggestions. If you are seeking renumeration for the gigs.. you can join the local musicians union as many church choir directors from affluent congregations will use union labor for big events like xmas or easter. Scanning the local newspapers for church xmas concerts will also give you an idea about which congregations have orchestras that do concerts etc. Many local community chorales also use pick up orchestras for concerts .. such as the one im' the bass section leader for in the DC area. You can also check out your local AGO (american guild of organists) or NPM (national association of pastoral musicians) chapters and see if they know of anyone looking for instrumentalists. The biggest asset you can bring is the ability to transpose by sight into C so you can read a flute/oboe/violin part that many pieces have. If you have any other specific questions or
can let me know what area of the country youre in I might be able to give you some nibbles.
