In fact, my experience is very limited, and I may just have been
lucky:-)

What Clark writes further is very sensible. When I reread my post,
which was made late at night, I notice that whilst characterising the
awe with which some players approach the idea of adjusting an instrument
themselves, I inadvertently gave the impression that people who really
know something may regard themselves as magicians.

That's almost invariably not the case in my experience, and I'm sure
isn't the case in Clark's.

Rather, we who know less can regard them as magicians.

The point is, in order to learn something, you need to respect those who
know more; but probably more importantly. you need to respect yourself
as someone who will in the future be able to understand what they
already know.
