I heard a very interesting story from a very reliable ex-Chicago source
regarding reamers. Apparently in Germany Lindemann played clarinets made by
Oscar Oehler who was certainly the leading clarinet maker in Germany in th
1920's and 30's. When Lindemann got a job in the USA, Oehler gave him a set
of reamers so that if anything happened to his clarinets, Lindemann would
be able to fix it. Oehler must have been extremely careful in seasoning his
wood because I have not detcted any ovality in any Oehler clarinet I have
measured whereas a lot of good 1960's clarinets are measurably oval.
Ovality implies shrinking, and shrinking more in one direction than the
other, and like my friend Tony Pay I know that correcting this must be
bringing the clarinet closer to its original size. Nick
