It is one of my pet theories that more kids quit band out of the
frustration of playing on improperly maintained instruments than for any
other reason. They are convinced that the problem lies with THEM, when, in
fact, the instrument itself is unplayable. Private instructors should be
able to spot these problems, but school band directors are not always
capable. Even when they are, the classroom situation may not allow him/her
to identify the problem, or the student may not ask for assistance.
