It's the impression I sometimes get here, anyway.)>>

That is what I hear as the "threat" from so many university directors and
coaches. It is a terrible situation to be in that a simple "brain fart" can
possibly ruin a career. But I sense that it is over-dramatized. Failure to
perform on a consistent basis would easily result in dismissal in most
places around the world...short of having family in charge of the
organization in some places.

Personally, I have no problem going to a performance and hearing a great
player slip or chirp. My teacher recently played the Ibert Trio for Oboe,
Clarinet and Bassoon and in the last movement got off at least a beat for
about 8 or so measures. He didn't realize it until the cadence and he just
held his note and then cadenced with the other two. I enjoyed the
performance as well as the drama of seeing how he would deal with it. I am
performing the piece tomorrow on our Trio/Quartet recital.

I believe people should just relax. That means the audience as well. If
you want a picture-perfect performance every time, buy a CD and put it on
repeat. You want to share in music making with living human beings...relate
to the imperfections and share as an educated and understanding audience
member.

[Note: I do not believe we should make mistakes all the time, but rather if
a mistake creeps in every once in a while, it is okay. It makes us human.
Shoot...interpretations bother me more than mistakes do.]

Robert
