Oh hell, if you've never played double lip and are trying to use a limp upper
lip that's never been used that way before, it's *going* to hurt after a
couple minutes! (without playing so loose that you sound like a kazoo). It's
like giving a beginner kid your setup with a 3-1/2 reed (or whatever) and
expecting the same lack of pain and good tone. (Think about how long you
spent on number two reeds, practiced, uh, sporadically, and sounded like a
kazoo... (and of course had a great time!) Well, that's the shape your upper
lip is in right now.)

Adults are... impatient. Without getting in the merits or detriments of
playing double lip, if you are interested in using it for whatever reason, do
it gradually! Two minutes a day for two weeks. Five minutes a day for the
next two weeks, and so on. As the time increases, I'd also recommend
frequent short spurts - that is, two minutes on, two minutes break, two
minutes on, two minutes tightening a screw, wax on, wax off. I literally
practiced with a three minute egg timer for a while to keep myself honest
with the breaks.
