You got it. This is exactly what I do, and not only does it keep things from
slipping, the extra thickness of the pad adds *additional* opening of the
ole' oral cavity. I use the thick squishy black pads (can't think of the
brand offhand) for both reasons.

And when even that isn't getting you through a job, shove up with your thumb
as someone suggested, or with your knees and think about numbing everything
with a cold beverage after the gig...
