Mitchell, I often use double lip as a way to regain a sense of basic
mechanics after periods (more than a couple of days) of not playing, or even
when a really bad run of reeds has made me doubt my sanity and my embouchure
position - whenever I get that stiff, uncomfortable feeling of a foreign
object in my mouth when I start to play. The trick then is to imitate the
shape and the sensations of the double lip - keep the upper lip back against
the teeth but not holding it under them. You can use the actual double lip
position any time you feel you've distorted the single lip version for any
reason.
