I really don't understand why this controversy persists. I haven't seen
this latest version, but I find it difficult to imagine that it adds
anything to what we already know.

We have Poulenc's final corrected draft of the sonata -- I actually have
a photocopy of it -- and that forms the basis of the previous latest
definitive edition, which corresponds very closely to the first (1963)
published version.

The fact that previous drafts of the piece were different, and were
played from by some well-known French (wow!-) clarinettists prior to the
first 'official' performance, has confused the issue. These
'privileged' players managed to get the edition changed back to what
they had been privy to, and it took some time to get back to the final
draft.

Still, I look forward to seeing this new version, even if only to argue
against it:-)

Another issue that this new version might address is that some of the
notes to be played in the piano part are not so well determined, because
Poulenc's manuscript looks as though it might contain uncorrected errors
in the piano part. Perhaps this new edition sheds light on that matter.

But funnily enough, we don't often hear a great deal about that
problem:-)
