Hello, Klarinet List.

I have been in Tucson for over 5 years. I have never
met Professor John Denman, but I did get to speak to
him once, briefly on the phone.

Professor Denman's second wife is the talented Dr.
Paula Fan, a Piano Professor at the University of Ari-
zona, here in Tucson. She coached the rehearsals of
my "Sonata for Flute and Piano" a few years ago. She
also played the piano part of my "Sonata No. 1 for Bb
Trumpet and Piano", when it had its World Premiere
at the Beijing Conservatory on June 1, 2001, when she
and Trumpet Professor Ed Reid, were on a tour of
Mainland China this last summer.

She came home early from that, because she had
just learned how sick her husband was, and swore me
to secrecy, until she could tell her brother and others.
Her brother is Michael Fan, a Violinist in the Tucson
Symphony, who happens to live in my apartment
complex. He's also a composer, mathematician and
computer wiz.

I don't know Michael Fan, nor Dr. Paula Fan that
well, but both are fine musicians, and great people. She
is extremely likable and easy to get along with, but for
her to be truly Impressed with someone, requires that
that person must be a uniquely excellent musician. She
was impressed enough with Professor John Denman to
have married and cherished him for many years, until
he passed away recently. I never got to meet the man,
but for her to have respected him so highly is a huge
compliment! His passing is a terrible loss for all of us!

I've heard many wonderful things about Professor
John Denman as a clarinetist, professor, and composer.
May he always be remembered with love and honor.
