Now I'm a bit more awake, I realise that I should have said for the
record what I'm sure you already know: that in general a longer scrape
can help, and that very flexible tips don't work so well. And it's
worth trying them before you narrow them, otherwise you spoil more than
you need.

Also, I find that pulling them away from the mouthpiece with a phone
card is sometimes instructive. (Slight twists have a much larger
effect, don't they, on this sort of setup.) And I've often thought that
it's not worthwhile eradicating a physical asymmetry until you're sure
that it's not exactly *that* asymmetry that you require to make the damn
thing work!
