To clarify:

Isabelle asked 3 (three) questions:

1)Going back about a hundred years, who do you think has
influenced the American clarinetist the most;

2)How many schools of clarinet playing do you think
exists in America?

3)Is there such a thing as the 'American sound'?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------=

I've answered the lineage part of your question Isabelle with the =
recommendation of the book.

Lineage applies to the entire subject of clarinetistry, including sound. =
Keep in mind that the difference in sound is undeniably part and parcel =
of differences in style or in "schools of playing". So if you define the =
American sound you may want to keep in mind the lineage part of the =
equation. To take distinctions in sound out of that equation simply =
because there is the suggestion that it too subjective to be of use =
would in my opinion be an unfortunate error.

You also asked, "Does anybody have suggestions on the structure of the =
tree and how far down I should go?"

This is answered partially in the book by references retrospectively to =
Bonade's own lineage. Perhaps part of your objective could be to =
identify and fill in the "top" part of the tree - the successful =
students of the students (of the students) of Bonade. Maybe it's up to =
the 3rd, 4th, or possibly 5th generation by now, I've never quite taken =
enough time to contemplate it actually.

Good luck in your endeavor!

Gregory
