You're right. When I think back, he didn't dictate that I should do this.
What he actually said was something like, "Just go ahead and leave the reed
on. It won't hurt anything."

As for what *I* think, I think that it's kind of a pain in the patoot to go
through the process of getting out the clarinet, loosening the ligature in
order to remove the reed, then dampening the reed and having to put it back.
If I don't store the reed with the mouthpiece, then one of those steps with
the ligature is eliminated. (I hate messing with the ligature, although I
trust that this feeling will pass as I become more confident with the
instrument.)

As I get more experienced, I feel more confident about judging what does and
does not work for me. Now, if only the dogs would stop howling whenever I
play. ;-)
