The oboe players at our school keep their reeds in holders designed by our
oboe teacher. They're made out of plastic Tupperware-like boxes, and contain
a damp sponge, some rock salt to prevent the growth of mildew, and a holder
for the reeds. The idea seems to be to prevent the reeds from ever drying
out completely. I tried to do the same with my reeds last winter, with some
success, but I got sick in the middle of the experiment, gave up, and played
Legere reeds almost exclusively for a couple of months. I plan to repeat the
experiment this winter, and see whether my reeds are in fact more responsive
during really dry weather.
