Honestly, a pretty, non-painful top a can be played without force and
without blood. It just takes work and trial and error. Mike is right - the
biting just makes it harder to achieve.

By the way, excuse what's kind of like spam, but this is rather related.
The Experimental Music Catalogue has some clarinet music available. I think
I wrote some time ago about their free bass clarinet piece offer, but they
also have a free pdf. sample page from Chris Hobbs' clarinet quartet (so you
can see if it's right for your quartet). More pertinently to this
discussion, they have a free pdf sample from the first page of the solo part
of _Swiftly to Virginia_ for Eb clarinet and piano. All you have to do is
send a request to <info@-----.uk> and they'll send you the
sample by return e-mail. You can also check these out on the web site below
for a fuller description, as I don't want to take up the bandwidth on this
list.

I claim affiliation, as you can see by my address - and the Virginia in
_Swiftly to Virginia_ is me.

Cheers,

Virginia
