There was a time when oiling clarinet wood was encouraged more so than what
seems to prevail these days. I have been advised that almond oil is of the
soft and gentle kind, with an appropriate viscosity to suit clarinet wood.
It`s main purpose is to keep the wood from drying, shrinking, warping and
cracking. It can make the surface of the wood more pleasing on the eye, but
this is of course cosmetic.
We seem to be advised more and more that it is not necessary to do this
however on a regular basis any more. On purchasing my (new) instruments my
dealer advised that after keeping a close watch on the wood for the blowing
in period, it would only be necessary to oil during the service of instru.,
which would be at a minimum of one year elapsing, and to not leave it (the
oiling) for more that two.
I believe this is a generalisation, and one would have to take into
consideration the temperatures and humidity of climate, and to adjust
accordingly - obviously more frequently in these extreme climates.
Manufacturers and local service technicians advice is not to be ignored. The
simple advice is to cast your eye over the wood at regular intervals. If you
are to conduct this oiling yourself, then a very minimum of oil is advised.
Make sure that none seeps onto pads. And don`t forget that it is a different
kind of oil to key oil. Do NOT use key oil.

Best, (hopefully from a not too oily)
