I thought that I'd know some of your band repertoire but I've not played
these. Some of the old Illinois band transcriptions from the 1960s - the
ones in manuscript - have some good Eb solos. If you get bored with what
the band gives you, do try solo or chamber work. Jack Brymer's chapter on
playing string music with clarinets in his book on the clarinet is useful if
you've never tried such work. Or you could ask a friendly composition
student for a piece.

For other Eb questions, Josh, it sounds as if your Buffet R-13 may be out of
tune. My Bb R-13 was problematic, but I took it to Brian Ackerman in east
London, who builds old clarinet and flute reproductions. He did a full
overhaul on my instrument and it came back playing beautifully in tune.
This is a job for a specialist, not the average repair person. And the
normal range on band Eb is e (g is less common). A good eefer should play
to top a with effort, but I wouldn't want a lot of fast technical work up
there. The only way I got higher (a top c# written in an early version of
one commissioned piece) was through a fake (teeth on reed).

Cheers,

Virginia
