It was a lot of fun, and not a little scary -- a piece with many, many
notes, some of which the janitor was sweeping off the stage after I left.

I've never been a big Shostakovich fan, but this piece could make me one.
The audience seemed really to get into it -- to their credit, since it's of
epic proportions, nearly an hour long. The whole orchestra played
wonderfully; the conductor, David Commanday, did a brilliant job.

At the risk of seeming to do the Mutual Admiration Society thing, Roger
played beautifully -- the solos especially, where he made small but
significant changes to his sound in order to evoke just the right feeling in
each.

PSO concerts are broadcast on WCBU, our local public station which streams
over the web (at www.bradley.edu/wcbu), so any list member who wants to hear
it should be able to. Some Wednesday night in the next few weeks -- I'll
try to remember to post the specific day.

By the way, to Kelly et al.: You may like your Patricola, but I doubt you'd
like mine (a borrowed instrument) -- I never was satisfied with the throat
and chalumeau tunings, and I had to "customize" some fingerings in the high
register to bring them into pitch. Not a big hassle even though the
Shostakovich is tough enough already, but adjustments I haven't had to make
with a Buffet Eb. (But if you think I'm about to get into a discussion over
which brand instrument is "best," you must think that I never read
klarinet!)

Anyway, it was all very cool, and I'm looking forward to The Rite of Spring
and Mahler's First, which will happen later this season.
