Well, I had no intention of contributing to a debate about teaching
methods when I responded to you, Robert. As I understood it, you wanted
feedback about your own playing.

I simply wanted to say that in general, when we encounter a difficulty,
whether that's a criticism by someone else of our playing, or a defect
we perceive in our own playing, it may make sense for us to concentrate
exclusively on one aspect of the instrument for a period.

Yona Ettlinger believed that such a concentration on the chalumeau was
worthwhile for all his, I suppose, 16/18 year old students when they
began to study with him.

You might agree, or disagree. But given the man's ability and control
of sound on the instrument, I wanted to say: if it might be helpful to
you -- and my judgement was that it might -- such a temporary
concentration may be worth a try.

To *you*, notice. I say nothing about your students in general.

Tony
