It was just a sketch of his approach, if only because I never underwent
Yona's teaching, or observed it directly myself. I was making the
suggestion to Robert because it seemed appropriate to the criticism he
described, and wasn't negated by what I heard of him in his excerpts.

Ettlinger wasn't dealing with beginners at the Guildhall. He was
dealing with students who were already quite able. And as as I
understand it, he gave a lot of feedback in the process, both in terms
of the sound that his students made in the chalumeau, and in terms of
the physical means they used to produce it.

I think that Abe Galper, as a colleague and friend of Ettlinger, might
be able to answer your queries about him better than I, as well as
giving you some idea of his approach with young students, if indeed he
did such teaching.
