I've never tried turning the bell around - I can't: I'm playing
Schmidt-Kolbe....;-)
It has a tuning-hole through the bottom tenon and the bell.

I've heard that a fair few German-system players leave the bell off
altogether - they deem it to be superfluous.

Good tip about the barrel, though.
