I, too, have a special reed. It is tipped at both ends. It also has an
interchangeable blank: that is, there is no top or bottom. Of course, there
is a need to use a special mouthpiece of my design. You can get the parts at
Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe's or Loper's High Performance. However, the
most elegant, and resonant material is a brushed aluminum extruded one-piece
custom-made item from a Harley-Davidson engineer, Walter Yamaguchi. It is
tuned to resonate at 440 cps and has great harmonics, with those who have
great reserves of residual lung capacity. The T-shaped configuration requires
that that the unused end be sealed in an airtight fashion. Galvanized lead,
with a high zinc content, appears to work best, but the threads have to be
machine-lathed to a high tolerance. Again, thank goodness for machine shop
technology from the auto racing professionals.
