At the risk of being tiresome, I would like to ask if anyone has any
"tricks" to suggest for the fingering in the fifth section of the Finzi
Bagatelles, "Fughetta," the third bar after "2:" in the chalumeau,
sixteenth notes of D-C#-B-C#- repeated five times allegro vivace. It drives
me nuts. Or is "practice, practice, practice" the only workable solution?

Just a few random suggestions:

(1) See if the forked (chromatic) fingering for B makes it any easier to
hang onto than the middle finger fingering. Maybe, maybe not . . .

(2) Mentally, make a new start (i.e. imagine that you're starting over) on
the third group of four, so that your grey matter isn't overwhelmed with the
sudden array of notes. Or use some idea like that (a new start or two within
the passage) to help you to hang onto the technique.

(3) Practice the passage in triplets.

(4) Be sure that right hand is well warmed up. Try the Right Hand exercises
in Jeanjean Vade Mecum du Clarinetiste.

All those suggestions plus a couple bucks might buy you coffee at Starbuck's,
but Good luck.

Chuck
