Oh, I forgot to say that the pot is on the floor -- one reason why I was
attracted to the idea, having seen the oboist do it so economically.

Your semaphore picture reminded me of the bass clarinet story -- I don't
know whether I read it here, or someone told me -- anyway, this
absent-minded bass clarinet player was using a short sling, customarily
attaching it to the higher mounting point, and by mistake hooked it onto
the lower mounting point. When he tried to play the instrument, he
found the mouthpiece somewhere above his head.

So he stood up.
