Subj: [kl] B/C# trill on normal Boehms
Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 05:54:34 -0400

We had quite a few posts about this about 12 months ago. I`ve just completed
rehearsals and concert of Gordon Jacob`s sextet for piano and wind 5tet. I
remembered klarinet from that time, and decided to conduct an experiment. I
didn`t mention to anyone of this trill being tricky, but just got on with
'my' version of holding down 2nd finger B all thru` the trill - the C# being
the normal 4 fingers left hand, and trilling the LH little finger. Played
slowly, it is of course totally out of tune. This trill lasts uninterrupted
for 8 bars, and is the only accompanying instru. underneath the main motive,
i.e. exposed. No one noticed. One or two audience spoke to me afterwards
without mentioning anything.
It it quite amazing what one can 'get away with', if one keeps mum.
The other musicians still don`t know.

How wide spread is the 'art of bluffing' I wonder?

Tony. W.
