It seems to me that the dunking in water technique described has superior
results (in a more responsive reed) to simply wetting the reed with saliva
in the context of a rehearsal/concert, but I wonder if there is some
empirical evidence of this. Ditto with regard to extending reed life.

Inspired by the little pot that the first oboe in front of me uses to
wet his reeds, a thing I've been doing recently with some success is to
wet the reed *on the mouthpiece* from time to time, by dunking it in
plain water......
