Hello everyone!

I need to find:

G. Setaccioli, Sonata Op. 31 in order to purchase. I have the clarinet part
to practice, but I need the originals for the performance and my library.
Thanks in advance.

While I'm mentioning it, has anyone here:

1. Heard of it?
2. Heard a recording of it performed?
3. Played it?

I intend to put it on my first DMA recital next spring. I have a recording
of a pretty good (except intonation) Italian player. If you're not familiar
with the piece, you can "picture" it as a combination of the Brahms Sonatas
as far as piano integration, Italian romantic color and intense technical
sections, though overall, not terribly difficult.

While I'm mentioning that! Any comments on this line-up:

Donizetti - Studie (unaccompanied Classical) ~4'
Piston -Trio for Fl., Cl. and Basson ~8'
Setaccioli - Sonata Op. 31 ~19'

Intermission

Brahms - Trio for Cl., Cello and Piano ~12' (?)
Eric Ewazen - Ballade for Cl., Harp and String Orchestra ~13'

About 55' or so of music for the full recital.

As a listener, would this recital sit well for you? As a clarinetist, would
you enjoy the repertoire presented?

Concerning the Ewazen Ballade for Cl and String Orchestra with Harp:

1. Heard of it?
2. Heard a recording of it performed?
3. Played it?

It, to me, is a fabulous piece and I am so excited to have finally come
across it. I have a recording of John Russo playing it. Though I am
generally not a fan of his timbre, he sounds really nice on this recording
of the piece. And, of course, he is a fabulous musician and technician.
VERY successful recording John, if you are reading. ;-)

I would suggest for everyone who is not familiar with the Eric Ewazen
"Ballade" for Cl., string orchestra and harp, that they get a copy of "The
Clarinet and Flute Soloists" and listen to it. I put it right next to the
Copland in beauty and interest to the listener. I have not seen the part
to the "Ballade" but I have played the Copland, and the former sounds more
technically challenging in the technical passages ( I mean that as a
clarinetist to another clarinetist. Musically it really does not interfere
with the musical ideas, but rather, enhances them very well). It sounds
like it reaches an a''' or Bb''', but I cannot be sure. It is very balanced
in using all registers of the clarinet. What a very nice change to hear!

I have contacted Eric Ewazen to order both the version with piano and the
original with strings. If no-one else on the list can enlighten us, I will
let you know the technical challenges as they appear on the actual page.
Listen to a recording to hear the musical challenges...simply beautiful.

Talk with you all later.

Robert
