Bill, You must remove the plastic thumb rest to put the clarinet into the
case but you need not remove the screwed-on plate that holds it. It's quite
simple to put it on or take it off. The actual thumb rest slides onto the
plate and a ratchet holds it in place. (For example, I slide it until it
clicks twice which is the best position for me). If you continue sliding it
(clicking it) in the same direction, it comes off. Frank
