Thank you! So many of the "what shall I do" questions that come up depend
very heavily for their answers on what's actually coming out (or not coming
out) of the player's instrument to motivate the question. There are several
possible explanations for "V 3.5 seems too hard." I've had students insist
(I did it myself as a student) that reeds are too hard when what's really
happening is that they're closing them. A better balanced reed of the same
or even slightly greater strength improves or eliminates the problem for
them. Others with the same complaint turn out to have a mouthpiece with
facing dimensions that are aberrant beyond normal manufacturing tolerances,
and the reed really IS too stiff. I can hear the difference, but I can't
read it in a Klarinet post.

As a general rule, a given mouthpiece facing and internal structure will
work well with a specific range of reed strengths. But to make a meaningful
suggestion to a specific student I need to hear the sound he/she is
producing to even begin to have a clue as to what the problem might be.
