Tom Ridenour has specific instructions on making such a device in his
excellent book, The Instructors Guide To Clarinet Teaching. Not only does he
use it to to flatten the backs of reeds, but he uses it to adjust reeds. I
have made a lot of these for my students and they work very nicely. No need
to have a knife, etc. for basic reed adjustment.
