Since our discussions here on "klarinet" tend to wander rather far afield at
times, I'll tell what I think is an interesting story about some of the
people who were on that tour. I won't mention any names, because the people
involved are still very much with us. Among the members of the band were
two sisters. One of the sisters married a trumpet player, with whom I was
later professionally associated, and who told me this story.

The other sister was walking in Moscow one day, when she got separated from
her group, and became hopelessly lost. She was trying to ask directions but
couldn't find anyone who could speak English. A crowd began to gather
around her, and she was understandably becoming quite apprehensive.
Finally, a small man barged through the crowd and asked her in perfect
English if she needed help. He was able to direct her back to where she
needed to go.

After finding her way back to her group, she forgot about the incident
entirely until one point early in the year 1964, a few months after the
assassination of President Kennedy. She was visited at that time by agents
of the FBI, who had many questions for her about the incident in Russia
several years previously. It turns out that the man who offered to help her
was Lee Harvey Oswald. She still doesn't know to this day how they ever
were able to find her.

I don't think there is a moral to this story, but I find it fascinating.
