I just received a copy of Abe's book, "Tone, Technique and Staccato",
and I was very pleasantly surprized about several aspects of the book.
A couple of months ago, I started using the Galper Clarinet Method
for all of my young students, and I was mesmorized by all of the
beautiful studies in the low register. My playing started to improve,
remarkably, just from playing these studies in the low register. The
first thing I noticed when I opened up "Tone, Technique, and Staccato"
was 23 gorgeous studies in the low register, many of them similar to
The Galper Method, Vol 1. Then, immediately following is a section,
"Transition to the Upper Register", which I enjoyed very much, because
it teaches "flexibility" in a very gentle way.
The next thing that I noticed was that Abe had made a wonderful
synopsis of some of my favorite studies and put them all into one book.
His book has the very best of Kroepsch, Klose Baermann, put into one
book. I can't even remember how many times I have lost books, trying to
haul around all 4 of my Kroepsch books, my Baermann Book and my Klose
book. I guess now that Abe has written this book, I don't really have
any more excuses for not practicing enough because it's all there, nice
and concise.
In the "Staccato" section, I particularly liked Abe's little
Rossini excerpts and Mendelssohn;s Schertzo, turned into lovely little
staccato exercizes. He seems to have the ability to take some of the
dreariness out of studying staccato.
I have heard that "Tone Technique & Staccato" is now available
through Mel Bay.That was a smart move on Mel Bay's part. I am going to
make sure that Graner Music, where I teach, will keep this book stocked.
