Wobbly corks

I think that the biggest problem with wobbly corks is that they are too
thin to begin with.

Some repairman I know, like to compress the strip of cork in a vise and
afterwards use it.

Another thing that is better for the cork is: the cork should be
straight across the joint.

No nice little mound, that wears out quickly.

The other thing: when I have my repairman put on a cork, the joints are
fitted very tightly.
A lot of cork grease has to be used.

Then most likely the cork will last longer than usual.
