I've read opinions on this list from people I trust state that
grenadilla is so hard it takes weeks for oil and moisture to penetrate
the surface to any appreciable degree.

....if you lare able to find it in the Klarinet archives, there is
mention of a well-known person (I don't remember the name) who kept a
chunk of grenadilla floating in some sort of bore oil for many years (10
years? 20 years?). Whenever someone challenged him, he would take the
block out of the oil and show that oil hadn't moved appreciably into the
wood. I don't remember the details --- perhaps he cut a slice off the
block to show the cross-section, or perhaps he weighed the block on a
balance.

....on the other hand, when I bought a rosewood flute recently (the
wood didn't seem as dense as grenadilla), I worried that it might crack
because of weather changes in transit, and I oiled it with almond oil
before I left the store.

Superstition or a good decision....?

Cheers,
Bill
