Well Jay,

You may a more competent clarinet player than I am,
but this is just horrible advice to be giving a
student. Significant injury can occur to "that
complaining child". Maybe a neck-strap is the advice
you should be giving. You advice is no different than
an athletic trainer telling an athlete to go ahead and
play on that sprained ankle or damaged knee. The
trauma in that thumb can be real.
