This reminds me of what I tell most of my students about the thumb, (those
who do not have a since of humor or are too old, don't get the benefit of
this advice). I tell them that my 8 fingers and two thumbs are like my
children, and it is my responsibility to discipline and train my children to
do exactly what I tell them. Unfortunately, as in all families, there is
always the complaining child. All it does is complain about everything
little thing. That is the thumb of the right hand; my complaining little
child. I explain to my students that the best thing you can do for this
complaining child, is ignore it. Eventually, the child will get the hint
that complaining will be of no use and go about doing it's responsibility,
which is; to hold the Clarinet while the other children get to play.
