Clark Fobes mentions the following piece:
Schoenberg "Five Pieces for Orchestra" (Contra Bass in A!) dbls on clarinet....
Gee, Clark, you just awakened a memory that I would have preferred to have remained DORMANT.
It must have been in the late 60's and I was just a kid, but a precocius and pushy one.
The Toledo Symphony had scheduled this piece and was looking for someone to play this part. (This was before I was contracted there).
When asked if I could play the part, I said SURE, no problem, then struggled like crazy to find a contra that would play at all, and then transpose the part, then try to keep the damn thing from squeeking all the time.
Somehow, I made it through the experience whole, and wonder of wonders, they actually hired me a few years later!!!!!!!!
I would rather have never recalled that one Clark!
