their junction with the upper joint. Thus the vibration generated by
the reed and mouthpiece may be nourished and communicated without any
diminution to the main body of the clarinet. Thick walls of heavy
wood, with tightly fitted wide tops of thick metal, have a constricting
effect on the whole instrument and may be damaging to the freedom of the
tone.

This puts us back in the "Does the material make a difference?"
debate again. Does the body vibrate? Is the reed a pure air valve or
not? Etc.
