The Barrel
This item appears in the "Clarinet" by Geoffrey Rendall.

The barrel, or socket is often considered the least important part of
the clarinet, a totally incorrect view in the writer's opinion.
If it is necessary to have one at all, which is open to question, let it
be made properly.
The walls, thin at the top should thicken gradually towards their
junction with the upper joint.
Thus the vibration generated by the reed and mouthpiece may be nourished
and communicated without any diminution to the main body of the clarinet

Thick walls of heavy wood, with tightly fitted wide tops of thick metal,
have a constricting effect on the whole instrument and may be damaging
to the freedom of the tone.
