Hi Nancy,
The symptoms you mentioned sound
familiar. For me, it is a matter of heeding to
Mr. Marcellus's advice on practicing "always
take a short break after 45 minutes or so."
Another technique that has helped me is
just SLIGHTLY moving your thumb to a different
position on the thumb rest. This is assuming
you have padded your thumb rest with surgical
tubing, or various other materials available.
You might want to try a new thumbrest.
There is a local clarinetist who has switched
to that huge one advertised in the Clarinet
Magazine (can't think of the name at the moment).
It works great for her and several of her students
now use it as well.
