Since everyone seems to have exhausted their guesses, what is it,
Walter?

(My final guess is a 'table' on which you keep a spare reed for
emergencies --- sudden reed death, etc --- with the aid of a rubber
band? Or perhaps the base for a lyre for extremely nearsighted
clarinetists?)
