The <> above the third note of the Schumann Fantasiestucke.

(This is wrongly turned into a longer crescendo and diminuendo,
beginning earlier and finishing later, in the edition by Garbarino.)

In string playing of the period, it often meant 'vibrato'. For us, it
could be thought of as a displacement of the barline in the clarinet
part, or alternatively, as a subphrasing calling attention to the
concert F natural, incidentally echoing the fp of the piano's second
melodic note, also an F natural.
