I wonder if a tenuto markings (lines) is interpreted differently than the word or abreviation (ten.) above or below a note. When I posted earlier saying that most conductors I have played under tend to hold a tenuto slightly longer, I was referring the word or abreviation. I know that the line and the word or abreviation are the same, but it seems that many conductors will hold a note with the word longer than full value but the line will be simply held full value. I have done this myself and this discussion has me thinking about this. Is this common practice? Does it depend upon the passage? Do some composers mean for the word or abreviation to be held longer than full value while others think of it as full value? Interesting discussion.
