My thoughts on the Bernstein Sonata.
It's a student work. It's not from the pen of a mature genius. It's not a Brahms Sonata.
It is fun, however, and a "crowd-pleaser" in many a recital. If it is deritive of Hindemith, and plays with Latin rhythms, remember when it was written.
Think of what Bernstein achieved with Latin rhythms only a very few years later - one of the most electrifying Broadway scores ever. A score that sounds astoundingly fresh after what, almost fifty years?
Anyway, I'm glad Bernstein composed the Sonata, and I will continue to perform and teach it.
