One of the favorite pieces by Cage among the bunch when i was undergrad
was "Fur Music".

I had the impression then, and have not changed since, that Cage was
making points with these works rather than pulling a scam.

Not that there aren't scam-masters in the arts.

Related comment:
Listening to ambient sound is a useful practice exercise, on several
levels.
