In regard to carry ons: I just flew out of and back into NYC / JFK. I
prepared for the no knives and other rules and put reed knives and screw
drivers and small electronic items (metronome, tuners, etc.) in a separate
small bag inside a larger checked bag. I carried my clarinet on as well as a
laptop computer; both were sent through the x-ray machine and the clarinet
case was held up for a moment as the "looker" asked another person to take a
look before it was allowed through. Simple.
