I am putting together a presentation on the clarinet for a group of
kindergarten through 5th grade students in an after-school arts program.
The goal is to introduce the students to the instrument in about 20-25
minutes.

Depending on what music you enjoy playing, my recommendation is to
include a bit of folk music (no copyright issues) that the children will
recognize. Greensleeves, Red River Valley, When The Saints Come
Marching In, Beethoven 9th, perhaps you could identify a child whose
birthday is upcoming and play Happy Birthday to him or her.

....anyway, something that pulls the children into the music.....
perhaps ask them to sing along..... depending on what you feel
comfortable with, and to show the breadth of music, perhaps a moment of
klezmer or a gliss (Gershwin),.... demonstrate staccato vs. legato and
talk about the tongue being a part of woodwind music.... make a game of
"How high can I go, can you sing as high as I can play?"

Cheers and good luck,
Bill
