I wanted to offer a word of thanks to whomever it was that recommended Anthony
Baines' "Woodwind Instruments and Their History" a few weeks ago. Despite its
rather dry British style and the fact that it has literally not been updated
since the Eisenhower administration, I find it wonderfully engrossing. It has
filled in numerous gaps in my understanding of the woodwind section and its
development.

I am struck by his very strong distinction between French and German
instruments and styles. The topic has been debated on this list several times,
and I never really understood the context.

I also now find myself with a strong desire to go find and play a contrabass
sarrusaphone...
